Hypothesis 2: Skeletal and Joint abnormalities due to improper nutritional requirements Improper nutrition can be the precursor to many problems in large breed growing dogs. Skeletal and joint deformities can happen as a consequence of over or under feeding which upsets the balance of particular nutrients. In this case we are presented with a nine month old Rottweiler that is allowed free choice Large Breed food. This can lead to excessive caloric intake if the dog overeats. This results in an increased metabolism leading to developmental bone defects and eventually to increased cartilage proliferation. Endochondral ossifications occur due to rapidly growing bones that become weak and less dense. Immature growth plate closure can also occur. Abnormal cartilage development, such as slow maturity and proliferation, accompanies abberations in ossification. The abnormalities described above all contribute to detectable skeletal disorders and accompanying joint problems. The animal in our case shows symptoms of abnormal skeletal development and joint pain such as reluctance to climb stairs, discomfort when sitting, etc. These symptoms may be linked to the animalŐs nutritional requirements not being met.
