HYPOTHESIS 3: NERVE DAMAGE Trauma to the hind legs resulting from being hit by a car could result in nerve damage. This would result in lameness, loss of function, and the inability of a pain response. This would be supported by the non-weight bearing lameness of the Doberman. The swelling attributed to the trauma could be applying an increase in pressure over the nerves resulting in a decrease in function. There were lacerations observed on the hind legs that could have potentially lacerated the nerves directly. However, the deep pain response indicated that nerve damage is unlikely.
