Hypothesis 1 TRAUMA Trauma is a possible cause for the hind leg lameness for a variety of reasons. First, there was the obvious injury of falling of the bed one year earlier. Trauma to the stifle would weaken the lateral support leading to luxation. This injury could result in nerve damage. This would explain the pain involved in lifting the tail. Nerve damage would result in muscle atrophy which would lead to scarring. Therefore, the patella would be constricted. This would lead to medial luxation. Also, an injury in the stifle joint could predispose Titan to dejenerative joint disease which would have the possiblity of showing up months later. Also, Titan could have had a bone injury, which healed incorrectly leading to reoccurring problems. Titan also could have injured ligaments that would lead to joint instability causing the medial joint capsule to become thickened. ( medial butressing causing cranial drawer sign to be negative.) Another possiblity would be a partial tear in one of the ligaments which could result in the intermittent lameness.
