This Concept Map, created with IHMC CmapTools, has information related to: Discussion Question 2, Navigation ???? Use these links to quickly navigate the summary, PAR has parameters as a research context and many want to be done with it when it's time to wrap up a PAR project. Sandee Options considered and chosen are often much more randomly selected or responded to reactively instead of the more (preferred?), proactive, planned approach. Not because I and the people I work with are not committed to lifelong learning and conscientious decision-making, but because we are in live, interactive contexts that challenge us to think and make decisions on our feet and often on the run., Where we blend... ???? PAR can play an important role in contributing to lifelong learning PAR can be equated with lifelong learning From my perspective, PAR is part of who I strive to be, but I would not assume this is the case for everyone. The differences vary greatly in the degree that we involve others and the amount of information we choose to share about the process. More or less the same however. If PAR is seen as solving real life problems then as we go through life learning and growing from our experiences then yes it would seem as part of lifelong learning, In regards to education, problem-solving which shares similar characteristics with the PAR approach, is classified as a learning skill. Skills are an ability to be able to do something competently. Problem solving is a skill. Something learned which then becomes natural to us. Chris When we are making decisions on our feet and on the run, many of us are doing so with much experience and expertise built into the on-the-fly decision making though we may not register the 'reflection in action' happening when we do this important decision making. See 'Donald Schon', According to Willis, PAR does focus on real-world problems (p. 264) and being a lifelong learner means solving these problems in the “easiest” manner possible. Karen S We are all lifelong learners (either intentional or not and in varying degrees). Although PAR has distinct parameters, could we not say that those parameters simply describe how we naturally learn about things in general?, Options considered and chosen are often much more randomly selected or responded to reactively instead of the more (preferred?), proactive, planned approach. Not because I and the people I work with are not committed to lifelong learning and conscientious decision-making, but because we are in live, interactive contexts that challenge us to think and make decisions on our feet and often on the run. Jill PAR is more of a definitive step which is taken to solve selected problems, rather than problems we meet as part of our everyday lives., PAR as Lifelong Learning... ???? General Disagreement: What we said..., ...just as PAR has allegedly done with the essential professional tenement that is lifelong learning-- neither is an end unto itself without professional accountability. Without it, our current state of unchecked professional freedom with regards to the matter of "to learn, or not to learn" may well be the undoing of us all. Louisa PAR is not synonymous with lifelong learning. PAR: -structure and process -larger impact -gives voice to all involved, General Disagreement: What we said... Where we blend..., How can a teacher be anything but and still (be allowed to) function? How is it that naming someone as such would seem to be a greater professional breach of code than their not being a lifelong learner? Shannon The 'lifelong learner' is so essential to good teaching - how can I teach if I don't love to learn?, PAR is iterative in the nature of the process. For example, you compare the action research model to an instruction design process and see much overlap. Carmen PAR has parameters as a research context and many want to be done with it when it's time to wrap up a PAR project., The 'lifelong learner' is so essential to good teaching - how can I teach if I don't love to learn? Chris PAR can be a part of what it is to be a lifelong learner PAR's structure is what helps to embed the practice into character, thus creating the lifelong learner consider hugely impactful individuals as having used PAR, though perhaps not as intentionally labelled as it is today? I think of Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr We can lifelong learn as groups within professions, especially as defined these days as 'Communities of Practice' If lifelong learning is to continue to grow through reflection and action (tr(y)ial and error - not error) through our own 'investigations' then could we not say PAR is something more like kin? PAR as making virtue of lifelong learning in the young, PAR as Lifelong Learning... ???? General Agreement: what we said..., General Agreement: what we said... PAR as making virtue of lifelong learning in the young Brent All humans at some point follow the process of 1) Problem: Some aspect of my life is not working 2) Solution: What should I change 3) Implementation 4) Evaluate 5) Repeat ., PAR is not synonymous with lifelong learning. PAR: -structure and process -larger impact -gives voice to all involved Karen PAR has a start and a stop, it can continue if what you have found improved student learning. Life long learning is an individual process which improves the self, whereas PAR's role is to improve a group through collaboration. PAR or any reserach has structure whereas life long learning can be done incedentaly such as walking down the street with a child and they ask "what's that"., PAR has a start and a stop, it can continue if what you have found improved student learning.
