Follow up: We decided to try to give the patient enteral feedings and supplements orally and to see if she allows the feedings in this method. One of our concerns related to the fact that she may not want to have the nasogastric tube, just like she does not like to wear dentures. We are afraid she may be noncompliant with this form of feeding also. However, since she is conscious and able to handle enteral feeding we decided to try this first. If the tube feeding fails, then we will try parenteral feeding through a peripheral vein since it is short term feeding that is needed. We are also concerned about the patient's eating and hydration status once she leaves the hospital. We do not wish to see her back again in the same condition. We plan to discuss care plans with the family since she is unable to take care of herself. Their suggestion of a nursing home, where she could get care 24h a day may be a consideration.
