Client Education Your calf has just undergone surgery to its left forelimb in order to correct poor healing from a fracture sustained during delivery. The limb is immobilized and the calf should be rested/confined to a stall with a soft floor. It is going home with a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic which should be given daily until the drugs are gone. To insure adequate healing and to improve the prognosis antibiotics should be given as indicated. The calf should be brought back in six weeks to check the progress of recovery. Obstetrical chains and calf jacks can do a lot of damage if not placed and used very carefully. You might want to consider C-sections in your future embryo transfer pregnancies due to the potential for cow-calf size mismatch.
