Explanation of hypothesis 2-spinal /peripheral nerve injury We are including this as a hypothesis since there is a bilateral hind limb lameness. We need to rule out spinal or nerve injury as the cause of the non weight bearing lameness. We are hesitant to believe that the nervous system is involved since the dog has perception of superficial and deep pain sensation in both hind limbs as well as in the tail. Motor function is intact in both hind limbs and tail . For these reasons, we believe nerve damage is not the culprit. If there was a nerve problem, we would expect to see partial or complete paralysis of one or both limbs/tail. However, the results of the reflex resonses were inconsistent , so we would need to do some advanced neurological testing to rule out spinal or nerve damage as the cause of lameness.
