Hypothesis 3

Congenital abnormalities--  

The trochlear groove may be too shallow and the patella cannot mechanically stay in place.

The muscles that hold the patella in place may be malformed.

The ligaments themselves may be attached at wrong insertion sites.

The ligaments may be weakened thus predisposing them to tears and stretching.
