Explanation of facts Lame in right front limb Ð localizes lameness to front limb Drags it most of the time Ð shows extent of lameness Has problems extending it Ð flexor tendons are tight or radial nerve (extensors) is damaged Bears weight when not moving Ð weight bearing lameness 7 weeks old Ð may be congenital Male quarter horse Ð heavily muscled and athletic breed Lays down a lot - weak Owner doesnÕt think he nursed like he should Ð not feeling well, anorexia, mechanical problems standing to nurse Lame for 2 weeks Ð since he is 7 weeks old, may be congenital problems showing up, or traumatic event Gets up ok Ð extensors not completely damaged DoesnÕt use the limb much Ð potential pain Tried treating with penicillin but it did not help Ð possible inappropriate treatment Nursing and eating hay and grain with his mother Ð is at least able to nurse and eat some of the time Moved from Ohio to West Virginia just after birth Ð stress of move, possible trauma 7 other horses on pasture Ð trauma from another horse Been confined to small paddock with a shed for cover since injury Ð stall rest Mare foaled on pasture with no complications Ð trauma probably not associated with birthing Foal stood and nursed within an hour Ð adequate colostral immunity, was not lame at the time of birthing-nursing Healthy until injury Ð probably not a systemic problem Think another horse kicked him Ð potential cause of trauma Have not been able to get vet to foal Ð may have a congenital defect that was not noticed by owner than could have been noticed by the vet Gave penicillin 2cc once a day for 3 days - Small scratches and abrasions noted on all four limbs Ð possible trauma, may be normal Recognizable dropped elbow when he moves Ð localized injury Mild atrophy of shoulder muscles of right side Ð possible nerve damage Some firm swelling just distal to atrophied muscles Ð localized injury/inflammation No instability or crepitance is noted Ð may be under heavy muscles and not palpable Mild flexural contracture of right front limb Ð tightening of flexors or radial (extensors) damage
