Plan of action: Firstly we will talk to the farmer about how much money he wants to spend on this bull calf. It he does not want to spend money we suggest selling the calf for slaughter. If the farmer wants to address the lameness the plan will be as follows: Diagnostic radiographs(lateral and dorso-palmar)-if the fracture is still present after 3 months we may be dealing with a nonunion. Blood work CBC, Chemistry, Electrolytes Culture and sensitivity to choose the proper antibiotic to treat the infection. Debride the wound. Confine the calf to prevent further damage. Esure that the calf has adequate nutrition for healing. Discuss repair(full function) vs salvage techniques. Discuss proper calf pulling technique with the farmer. Also suggest using larger cows as recipients to avoid dystocia.
