Client Education With the first option of leaving the calf alone and trying to salvage for slaughter, you will have to initially give antibiotics and watch the calf closely. Hopefully there will be some union of the bone allowing the calf to get around enough to eat and drink. This will only allow the calf to get to slaughter age when he will finished at 1200 pounds. This option will definitely not work if you are trying to still use this animal as a breeding animal. If this is desired of the animal he will become around 2000 pounds by the time he is 4 years of age and he will have a lot of weight on his legs. If casting option is selected, then the cast will have to be replaced often to allow the bone to grow. The plate may also have to be replaced to allow for the proper bone lengthening. With either option the calf must be watched closely and periodic radiographs could be taken to monitor progress if desired.
