Facts 17-month-old Doberman (still growing) HBC 3 days ago (trauma) Will not put weight on hind legs (limb/joint injury) Condition stabilized after treatment at another vet (dog on pain meds, not in shock) Dog given Pred, Butorphanol, and Duragesic, so may not be showing signs of pain (impact on orthopedic exam results) Healthy prior to trauma (no history of trauma) Being fed Big Red dog food (potential nutritional problemÑgeneric dog food) Dog lives with lots of other animals, and is an inside/outside dog (will impact recovery protocol) PE/Orthopedic Exam - TPR normal -Non-weight bearing on hind legs -Superficial and deep pain sensation in both legs and tail perineum (nerves prob. OK; pain at tail perineum may indicate pelvic problem) -Reflex responses in the hind legs are difficult to evaluate because the responses are inconsistent and are not repetitive (dog on pain meds, so may not be getting true or accurate assessment) -Motor function is present in both hind legs and the tail, but weight bearing was not attempted. (probably not a nerve deficit; instability of joints/limbs, dog in pain) - Superficial skin abrasions on lateral side of R hind leg; leg swollen distal to stifle; palpable instability of R tibia Ð tibia does not appear to be continuous in mid-shaft area (tibial fracture) - Joints of R hind leg appear to be normal - Upper L hind limb is swollen; L hind leg swollen all the way down to the toes. - Bone continuity of upper L limb is suspect b/c of abnormal movement and occasional crepitation - Bones and joints of remainder of leg appear intact and normal apart from diffuse subcutaneous fluid accumulation (possibly due to admin of shock dose of fluids, or swelling due to inflammation)
