Harlow and Harlow tested a behaviorist model of attachment based on reinforcement.  Their study used monkeys who were separated from their mother at birth.  Monkeys were placed with two artificial mothers, a wire one which provided food and a soft cloth one. When infant monkeys were frightened by a strange toy, they went to the cloth mother.
